âCharae Spencer! I thought that was you!â
Charae jerked up as her name was announced in a far-too-cheery voice, especially given the circumstances.
Oh no. Not Penelope.
She looked up to find Penelope walking toward her, bright yellow daisy-printed scrubs screaming sunshine. Gray sneakers, that reminded her of the dreary day outside, squeaked on the tile.
Today she couldnât even muster a fake smile. âI didnât know you worked here.â
âYep! Iâve been an LPN for five years. Helping people is my jam.â
Ugh. So painful when she was trying to be cool. Now how could she get rid of herâ¦
God gave me the name Penelope. Malachiâs words from yesterday dropped into her mind, stalling all other thoughts. You donât love me or each other as you did at firstâ¦
Shut up! She tried to turn off the thoughts, but they replayed in her mind as if on repeat.
âYou okay?â Creases puckered Penelopeâs forehead and her eyes held real concern.
âNo. Iâm not.â The words choked out.
âIâm so sorry. Whoâre you waiting for news on? Maybe I can find something out.â
Well, it couldnât hurt. âLuna Starr. They took her back about ten minutes ago.â
A sympathetic nod. âTen minutes isnât much time in this place, but let me ask around, okay? Iâll be back soon.â
Penelope whirled, her shoes squeaking their symphony with each movement.
âPenelope.â
The woman turned back, her short blonde ponytail swinging with the movement.
âThank you. I appreciate your kindness.â
âDonât thank me yet, sister.â Penelopeâs perky tone had at least dialed back a notch. âI may not learn anything.â
âStill, I appreciate you trying. Lunaâs a good friend.â Second only to Bella, who she already knew she would lose soon.
âIâll be praying for her. And you.â Penelope offered a small smile before continuing on her way.
Charae leaned her head back against the wall. She was a horrible human being. And Malachi had been absolutely right. Not only did she not love Penelope as she should, there were a whole lot of people, especially in the church, that she didnât love.
Did that mean Malachi was right about the other part, too? That she didnât love God like she once had?
For the first time since Malachi had confronted her with scripture, she focused her mind and prayed. Listened. And felt the truth in her spirit.
It was true. Every word.
Sure, she went to church. Volunteered and served and tithed. But it was little more than a checklist of things she felt Christians should do. Another responsibility on her already long to-do list.
Love? Well, that barely factored into the equation.
Pressure built behind her eyes. Even Jace had seen it, in a roundabout sort of way. She was the one whoâd been blind to her own heart.
Lord. The word rippled with anguish in her soul. Iâm sorry. Teach me to love You like I should.
âCharae.â Michaelâs voice pulled her from her prayers.
She opened her eyes to find him approaching, his uniform showing heâd come straight from work. When sheâd left the house this morning, sheâd expected to work a full day herself. At least her job afforded her flexibility and autonomy.
